A tragic helicopter crash in New York City on Thursday claimed the lives of all passengers aboard, including a prominent European business executive and his young family.

Agustín Escobar, a senior executive with Siemens, his wife Merce Camprubí Montal, and their three children—aged 4, 5, and 11—were among the victims of the devastating accident that plunged the tourist helicopter into the Hudson River.

The family, originally from Barcelona, Spain, had been visiting New York City when the tragedy occurred. The pilot, a 36-year-old flying for New York Helicopters, also perished in the crash.

Escobar, a respected figure in the European business community, had been appointed head of Siemens’ operations in Spain and Southwest Europe in 2022. His leadership within the global technology conglomerate was widely recognized and valued.

In a 2022 press release announcing his appointment, Miguel Ángel López, the former head of Siemens Spain, praised Escobar’s work, describing it as instrumental to the company’s growth in sectors such as mobility and transportation.

“With Agustín Escobar, we have the best possible successor to lead the company in Spain. In recent years, his work has been key to Siemens’ success in the field of mobility and transport,” López said.

The sudden and tragic loss of Escobar and his family has sent shockwaves throughout both the corporate world and the international community.

Colleagues and friends remember Escobar as a visionary leader, a devoted family man, and someone who brought a sense of humanity and innovation to his professional role. For Siemens, the loss is not only personal but also a significant blow to a key region of its operations.

The fatal flight took off from the Wall Street Heliport around 3 p.m. and was bound for a scenic tour along the New York skyline. Just over 15 minutes later, the helicopter crashed into the Hudson River near Hoboken, New Jersey.

According to officials, the chopper had reached the vicinity of the George Washington Bridge before it turned south and ultimately crashed. The helicopter, a Bell 206 model, was reportedly on its sixth flight of the day, an operation run by New York Helicopters, a company offering aerial tours of Manhattan and its surroundings.

The helicopter was found upside down in the frigid, 50-degree water when emergency crews arrived at the scene. Despite the rapid response, there were no survivors. Authorities have not yet released the name of the pilot pending notification of family members.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash. Investigators will examine factors including mechanical issues, weather conditions, and pilot performance to determine what led to the deadly incident.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams addressed the public during a press briefing shortly after the crash, offering his condolences to the families of the victims.

“Our hearts go out to the family and those on board,” Adams said. He emphasized the commitment of city officials and federal investigators to fully understand the circumstances of the crash and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
